The 'M' word

October 14, 2015

Hey guys!! It’s October 14th and it’s Dwarfism Awareness Month!! What I wanted to share today was the topic of the word “MIDGET.” Most people do not know this, but the M-word is a NO-WORD among the little people community. Throughout our history this word was used to describe people of short stature in the side/freak shows that were part of the circus. The origin of this word depicts us as an object, a thing to be gawked, starred or laughed at. These freak/side shows were for people’s amusement and these are still things that we deal with today. People still think its funny when they see a dwarf. We are often pointed at, laughed at, made fun of, or made to feel un-human or different. The word “MIDGET” is symbol of that injustice and that is why we fight very hard to spread awareness about it and teach people that it is wrong to say. It is the same as saying other derogatory terms such as nigger or fag. The word “midget” falls into that category!! We all know now how those words are WRONG to say… lets add the M-word to that list as well… and start calling people by their name. ;)

Excerpt from LPA website:

In July 2009 the word "midget" was declared inappropriate and offensive. Preferable terms are: having dwarfism, short stature, little person, lp, and the medical terminology use of dwarf.  A person's name is always the most preferred.

LPA has registered a complaint with the FCC over the use of the "m" word.  Our goal is to raise awareness around the offensive impact of the word in order to eliminate its use in media, popular culture and in everyday language.
